Amatsu-Mikaboshi is the most enigmatic of the Eastern Powers. They call him the August Star, and he represents the greed apparent in every mortal heart. If Ukiyo-e is just a reflection of the human spirit with its chaotic edifice, then Amatsu-Mikaboshi is the first premise to which lived reality is a conclusion. Many laymen and women consider him to be “evil,” but there is no scholastic or religious precedent to suggest that Amatsu-Mikaboshi is held within the confines of a moral sphere.

The main study of him is done by reverse engineering precepts and teachings from the Light of Heaven which seem to be in direct opposition to the August Star, though even that conflict is hidden in poetry, preaching, and holy sermons.

Some scholars suggest that the inability to study the August Star is the East’s inability to face its own reflection; there have been periods and dynasties that outright banned his worship. Even today, paying lip service to Amatsu-Mikaboshi is taboo… and not just because it’s unclear what benefit it brings to do so!
